Here’s some news to bring Monday morning cheer. Adding to the 11 public holidays in Singapore this year, President Tony Tan has declared Friday, August 7, 2015 as a public holiday, in honour of the SG50 celebrations.
This will make for an extended Jubilee Weekend to celebrate the country’s 50 years of independence, over August 7 to 10.
The announcement, made over the weekend, by the Ministry of Manpower, said the initiative would “enable all Singaporeans to participate in commemorating this special milestone in our nation’s history.”

“I am pleased that we can have the SG50 Public Holiday and a Jubilee Weekend filled with meaningful and inspiring activities, for Singaporeans to come together and celebrate as one,” said Minister Heng Swee Keat, also the chairman of SG50 steering committee.
Locals can look forward to various special programmes over the Jubilee Weekend, to be held all over the island, such as the Marina Bay area, the Botanic Gardens, and the Sports Hub.
