PHEKS 2025 Southern Zone sees "historic" allocation of RM10mn to strengthen Malaysia's labour ecosystem

The HR ministry said so far, more than 551 applications worth RM7.15mn have been approved, covering five main clusters including training & education.

The Trade Union Affairs Programme (PHEKS) 2025 has reaffirmed a commitment to strengthening the role of labour unions in building an inclusive and progressive employment ecosystem. On Tuesday, 3 June 2025, the Southern Zone event was held at the Holiday Villa Hotel in Johor Bahru, spotlighting key initiatives under the programme.

This year’s PHEKS saw a significant boost in funding, with RM10mn allocated — an increase from RM5.8mn in 2024.

As of now, more than 551 applications totalling RM7.15mn have been approved, spanning five key clusters:

  • Training and education,
  • Research,
  • Scientific writing,
  • Digitisation, and
  • ICT hardware procurement.

The event also marked the launch of the Research and Scientific Writing Book Related to the Trade Union, aimed at enhancing knowledge and leadership among union representatives.

In his speech, YB Dato’ Sri Abdul Rahman Mohamad, Deputy Minister of Human Resources, stated that the government’s support reflects the principles of Malaysia MADANI — justice, welfare, and charity.

He noted that the allocations were not merely figures but reflected the government’s concern for strengthening unions as agents of social change and protectors of workers’ rights.

Additionally, he emphasised the importance of tripartite social dialogue between the government, employers, and employees as a foundation for fair and balanced policymaking.

The Southern Zone gathering reinforced the strategic role of unions in representing employee interests and safeguarding their welfare amid ongoing changes in the employment landscape.
