The pandemic has led to a re-examination of the workplace as businesses realise the urgency of optimising their operations. According to Links International, in the field of human resources the winning job role of 2020 in Hong Kong is HR Information Systems (HRIS) analyst, and the losing job role is talent acquisition-related.

The report explained that prior to Covid-19, some businesses were already moving towards greater HR digitisation. The pandemic had undoubtedly accelerated the need for digital HR support as remote working arrangements have become the norm for most white-collar workers. As a result, businesses are keen to have talent with skillsets to help implement HR digitisation projects as well as re-establish their digital focus as part of their new normal.

Consequently, employees with experience with HRIS and integrating HR system upgrades, rebuilding company culture, and restructuring specialists, are highly sought after.

Internal recruitment and talent acquisition roles were decimated during the first 10 months of 2020 as companies put hiring’s on hold. In particular, larger businesses using recruitment process outsourcing models cut as much as 75% of their talent acquisition teams in response to reduced hirings.

Additionally, the report cited HR generalist roles as "volatile" and HR, administration and business support roles as "losing job functions".

Looking forward, traditional HR functions and roles will have the hardest time finding their footing and have the longest recovery times, forecasting from six months to a year. Diversified companies with a strong digital HR foundation usually make a speedy recovery.

The HR administration and business support function recovery will be dependent on the global development of the pandemic. And more companies will want to re-establish their HR foundation and shift the focus to specialised HR talents. Some organisations might even choose to outsource their HR to reduce costs and improve business efficiency.

The overall expected corporate salary increments will be around 0-4%. For HR professionals who stay in the company, the project salary increment will be 0-3%. Conversely, for those who decide to get a new job, the salary increment will be significantly higher, at around 5-10%.
