Sarawak's industrial harmony index hits 81.5%, nearing national average

The state’s improved score reflects stronger employer-employee relations, with efforts ongoing to meet Malaysia’s national target of 83%.

As reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Sarawak has recorded an 81.5% score on Malaysia’s National Industrial Harmony Index (IHI) for 2024. This marks an increase from 79.3% in 2022, indicating a “good” level of labour relations in the state.

Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), shared the update at the opening ceremony of the Sarawak Industrial Harmony Programme 2025, held in Kuching on 30 July 2025 (Wednesday).

“If I am not mistaken, the National IHI for the Malaysian level is at 83%, so we still have work to do to increase it from 81.5% to 83%,” he said.

Datuk Gerawat shared that the improved score reflects the reality of industrial relations in Sarawak and signals a more harmonious labour environment across the state.

To continue this momentum, he encouraged more companies in Sarawak to take part in the IHI Self-Assessment (SA) through the Industrial Relations Information System (IRIS), a free platform provided by the Department of Industrial Relations Malaysia (JPPM).

Companies that meet the criteria through the IHI SA will receive the Sijil Penarafan Syarikat Harmoni (SPSH), a certification recognising them as harmonious companies. This can enhance their reputation among investors, jobseekers and industry competitors in Malaysia and particularly in Sarawak.

Speaking at a press conference later, Datuk Gerawat expressed satisfaction with the latest figures, describing them as a sign of progress.

“I have a lot of hope and confidence that our employers, our companies in Sarawak will take positive steps to improve their performance,” he added.
