About 10% of Meta's Reality Labs division could be impacted by planned workforce reductions

The reductions are expected to affect metaverse teams working on virtual reality headsets and social platforms.

Meta has announced plans to cut about 10% of its workforce in its Reality Labs division, according to a Reuters report citing New York Times. The planned cuts are said to be announced as early as Tuesday (13 January), US time, and are set to "disproportionately affect those in the metaverse unit who work on virtual reality headsets and virtual social networks."

This comes after recent news that Reality Labs' second quarter earnings in 2025 logged a loss of US$4.53bn and recorded just US$370mn in sales during that period.

According to Reuters, Andrew Bosworth, Chief Technology Officer, Meta, has called for meeting on Wednesday, and has urged staff to attend in person.

Meta has declined to comment on HRO's queries on the affected roles and outplacement support for affected employees.
