Asia’s top universities 2026 revealed: 8 Hong Kong institutions ranked in top 100

Chinese universities continued to dominate the top 10, while leading institutions from Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong completed the list.

Chinese universities once again secured the top positions in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026, despite intensifying competition across the region.

Tsinghua University and Peking University maintained their lead, ranking first and second respectively. Overall, Chinese institutions accounted for five of the top 10 universities and 20 of the top 50 – figures unchanged from last year.

Singapore’s two leading universities also delivered strong performances. The National University of Singapore held onto third place, while Nanyang Technological University, Singapore retained its position in joint fourth.

In East Asia, several universities in Japan and South Korea recorded modest improvements in their overall scores, but nevertheless slipped in ranking positions. Described as a relative decline rather than weakening performance, Catherine Tushabe, data scientist at THE, noted that gains made by institutions in both countries did not keep pace with global trends.

One of the standout developments in this year’s rankings was the strong showing by Hong Kong universities. All six institutions ranked within the top 50 last year retained their positions, while two additional Hong Kong universities entered the top 100, bringing the total to eight.
