MOM warns Singaporeans of bogus phone calls

Following reports of bogus ‘SkillsFuture’ websites and social media accounts, Singapore's Ministry of Manpower has released a statement warning the public against bogus phone calls.

The statement was issued after members of the public alerted MOM of receiving suspicious calls from a person claiming to be an MOM or government officer, and asking them to transfer money to an account to resolve issues related to their stay in Singapore or work pass application.

The phone number displayed on the receiver’s phone is that of the MOM Contact Centre’s hotline – 6438 5122.

"This is a scam. Our officers will not make such calls to ask for fund transfers. We have advised the affected individuals to lodge police reports," MOM stated.

The government body advised locals to remain vigilant, and not reveal any personal information or transfer any money after receiving such calls.

"MOM will not ask you to make a payment through a telephone call, especially to a third party’s bank account. In such situations, you should ignore the call," MOM stated.

It advised members of the public who have information related to such incidents to call the police hotline at 1800 255 0000 or dial 999 for urgent police assistance.
