Malaysia addresses the challenge of increased workload amongst healthcare workers

The Ministry of Health is opening the placement of new graduate medical officers for appointment to several hospitals apart from state hospitals.

Acknowledging the challenges of healthcare workers across the country in the face of increased workload, Malaysia's Ministry of Health (KKM) is implementing several short- and long-term measures to overcome this problem.

Most recently, KKM has opened the placement of new graduate medical officers (PPS) for appointment to several hospitals apart from state hospitals, spurred by the growth in the percentage of PPS slots filling. This placement offer was implemented through the e-houseman system on 13 May 2024, involving 792 candidates.

Prior to this, it was decided at the beginning of this year that placements would be open to state hospitals only because PPS appointments were found to be decreasing, along with the filling of PPS slots in state hospitals. Until April 2024, KKM has implemented two new appointment series of PPS involving a total of 701 people in the first appointment series, and 803 people in the second appointment series.

For the next series of appointments, the placement of PPS in other hospitals will be periodically assessed, taking into account the number of candidates received from the Public Service Commission as well as other related factors.

At the same time, a total of 747 medical officers who had completed their graduate training were deployed to all states to cover the shortage of existing medical officers in May.

Per KKM's statement, the purpose of the training given to PPS during placements is to ensure that they get sufficient exposure and clinical training: "This is important so that they are able to provide quality services and be able to practice safely."

KKM also instructed all hospital directors to ensure the welfare of all health workers is maintained, even as the level of filling PPS placements in the hospital is in the improvement stage.
