In a world of shifting geopolitics and evolving talent expectations, clarity, partnership, and flexibility are redefining what it means to enable cross-border talent movement, Justin Kwok, International Mobility Partner, APAC at Philips, affirms.
For Justin Kwok, a "good day" isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about being seen as a strategic partner who solves real, complex challenges alongside business and HR leaders. As International Mobility Partner, APAC at Philips, Kwok brings over 12 years of experience across consulting and in-house mobility roles to a function that often straddles compliance, cost management and employee experience.
Ahead of his session at HRO's #TalentMobility conference, he tells Mary Ann Bundukin why global mobility must shift beyond administration, how he stays inspired in a role with few peers, and why clarity, partnership, and flexibility are the guiding principles behind enabling future-ready talent in an increasingly dynamic world.
Q What does a “good day” at work look like for you, that kind of day that reminds you why you love what you do in HR?
A good day at work for me is when there are meaningful conversations with stakeholders, where we are seen as strategic partners rather than an administrative function. When I collaborate with leaders to solve a complex challenge or move talent across borders as a team, it reminds of why I love what I do. There is a real satisfaction in landing on a solution that supports business needs while balancing compliance, cost and employee experience.
Q People often turn to HR for support, but who or what helps you recharge and stay inspired?
Being in HR can sometimes feel isolating because there isn’t really a “HR for HR”. That’s why network groups like Human Resources Online are valuable spaces to exchange ideas and perspectives. My colleagues within the HR function are also a strong source of support and inspiration.
Outside of work, I make it a point to recharge through exercise and personal time. Stepping away helps me return with clearer thinking and renewed energy.
Q If you could describe your leadership philosophy in three words, what would they be, and how do these guide your approach to developing mobile, future-ready teams?
Clarity, Partnership and Flexibility.
Clarity is of utmost importance because mobility is complex. I strive to create clarity for all stakeholders from the start – Policies and processes should enable, not confuse.
Partnership reflects how mobility succeeds; through collaboration with HR, business leaders, finance, payroll, and vendors. Future-ready teams should combine technical depth with commercial awareness and strong stakeholder management.
Flexibility is critical in global mobility, in today’s environment of geopolitical shifts, evolving talent expectations, and business priorities. Global mobility teams and policies should be adaptable without losing governance – Global Mobility should never be a showstopper; we are here to guide the business forward without compromising governance.
Q As a speaker at #TalentMobility, what is the key message you hope attendees will take away from your session?
For me, global mobility must move beyond cost tracking and compliance reporting to clearly articulating business value. ROI isn’t just about cost control—it’s about impact. It’s about the partnership behind each move, the capability developed, and the opportunities created.
When we connect mobility to both real business outcomes and real people, we elevate ourselves from administration to influence—and that’s where our real value lies.
