In his current role as HR Director, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor Leste at ofi, Dedev will be joining us on a panel at HRO's second edition of Transform Talent Indonesia this 23 October to discuss a key challenge leaders in Indonesia are facing: Finding the perfect match of skills and attitude in talent to close their vacancies.

Ahead of his session, the leader reflects on early learnings in HR, the steps he believes are necessary to transform today's talent into the talent that the business needs, and more.

Q Thinking back to your first day in HR, what is the most important learning that sticks with you until today?

One of the most fundamental lessons that HR professionals learn early in their careers is the intricate balance between the business objectives of the company and the wellbeing of its employees.

This involves gaining a profound understanding of the company's strategic goals and determining how HR practices can effectively contribute to achieving these objectives.

Additionally, it requires cultivating empathy and compassion for employees, recognising and addressing their individual needs and challenges. Successfully aligning these two aspects is essential for creating a positive and productive work environment.

This equilibrium is a recurring theme in the HR field, and it continues to develop and evolve throughout one's professional journey.

Q What steps do you believe are necessary to transform today's talent into the talent that the business needs?

To ensure that today's talent is equipped for the future, organisations must invest in a comprehensive approach that addresses both skill development and cultural alignment.

  1. Skill development – Identify the skills our organisation will need in the future.
  2. Employee wellbeing – Invest in initiatives that improve employee satisfaction, engagement, and wellbeing.
  3. Leadership development – Invest in programs to develop the skills needed for leadership roles.
  4. Technology use – Leverage technology to create new products, services, and business models.

Q Could you share emerging trends that you believe will have the most significant impact on HR in the next few years?

In the future, employee experience will be at the forefront of workplace culture. Organisations will prioritise creating personalised employee experiences to meet the unique needs and preferences of each individual. HR will leverage advanced data analytics and employee feedback to identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall employee experience.

This focus on personalisation and continuous improvement will foster a more engaging and supportive work environment for all employees.

AI & automation are one of the most exciting advancements in HR technology is the emergence of AI-powered tools that can automate routine tasks. These tools are capable of handling tasks such as recruiting, onboarding, and payroll processing, which can free up HR professionals to concentrate on more strategic initiatives.
