1 December marks World AIDS Day, a prime opportunity for employers to prioritise their workforce's health and wellbeing. We encourage you to join us in promoting the importance and benefits of early HIV status knowledge.
The National HIV Testing Recommendations provided by National HIV Programme (NHIVP) advise that every adult aged 21 years and above should be offered HIV screening at least once in their lifetime, regardless of risk factors. Knowing your status early leads to early treatment and prevents others from getting infected - but one of the deterrents to individuals getting tested is the fear of discrimination and the lack of knowledge about the virus.
Anonymous testing is available
Anonymous testing is a critical strategy to overcome the stigma associated with HIV screening. There are currently 10 designated Anonymous Test Sites across the country, where individuals can get tested without providing personal identification. Additionally, organisations like Action for AIDS (AfA) have their anonymous mobile testing service that covers multiple venues across the island, bringing confidential and accessible testing to various communities and workplaces.
Since end-January 2025, as part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to make testing more accessible and encourage regular testing, HIV self-testing kits have been available at retail pharmacies nationwide for over-the-counter purchase. These anonymous and convenient options are offered in addition to the established, traditional testing services provided by polyclinics and hospitals, ensuring that every employee has a choice that meets their needs.
