Talent & Tech Asia Summit 2024

Don’t ditch tradition for technology just yet

Job seekers in Singapore are twice as likely to turn to a recruitment agency and three times as likely to use a job board than social media when looking for a new role.

In fact, 57% of respondents to Resource Solutions’ Asia Talent Insights Survey 2014 said they have never previously used social media to look for jobs.

Simon Bradberry, managing director of Resource Solutions Asia, said this suggests traditional routes in job hunting are still significantly more successful, and an avenue companies should continue to tap on when looking for talent.

According to the survey, pay is - perhaps unsurprisingly - still the most important thing candidates look for when hunting for their next job, followed by career progression opportunities, benefits and work-life balance.

The report also highlighted the power of referrals and recommendations, with 99% of respondents saying they would consider a job if it were suggested by a friend or colleague.

However, companies should also be wary of how a bad candidate experiences can negatively impact them. About eight in 10 respondents said a bad recruitment process would “influence the probability of buying goods or services” from that organisation.

Respondents also noted they believe the most credible source of information about a potential employer is company rankings, followed by friends or colleagues – again reemphasising the power of word of mouth, careers websites and social forums.
