Thailand in 15-day mourning period for Princess Bajrakitiyabha: Advisory for all businesses, tourists, and the general public

Government agencies and state enterprises have been asked to lower flags to half-mast, while daily routines and public events may continue under official mourning guidelines.

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has confirmed that daily life and public activities, including concerts, sporting events, conferences and entertainment programmes, may continue as normal during the mourning period following the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati.

The clarification came after the Prime Minister chaired a special Cabinet meeting at Government House on 12 June 2026, as cited by Thaiger, following the Bureau of the Royal Household’s official announcement that the Princess passed away peacefully at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital the night before at 7.48pm, at the age of 47.

Before the Cabinet meeting began, PM Charnvirakul led ministers in a moment of silence in tribute to Her Royal Highness. The meeting focused on royal funeral arrangements and guidance for public mourning practices, with relevant ministries and agencies instructed to coordinate support for the ceremonies and for members of the public expected to attend.

Addressing public concerns, he said people may continue their daily routines and work as usual. Public events may also proceed, but organisers are expected to ensure activities are conducted appropriately and in line with guidance from the Royal Household Bureau.

Events should begin with a moment of silence as a mark of respect, the Prime Minister said.

The Cabinet also called on government agencies and state enterprises to lower national flags to half-mast and observe a 15-day mourning period starting June 12.

The Prime Minister also shared that previously scheduled overseas visits, including meetings with foreign leaders, can continue as planned, though ministers and officials have been advised to prioritise essential duties and limit travel duration where possible.

In a national address on Facebook, the Prime Minister expressed the government’s deepest sorrow and condolences on behalf of the Thai people. He praised Her Royal Highness as a revered figure who dedicated her life to the nation, describing her as a legal scholar, diplomat and humanitarian whose legacy would continue to inspire the country.

He also called on citizens to honour the Princess through acts of kindness, care for one another and support for the underprivileged during the national period of mourning.

Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati Kromluangrajasarinisiribajra Mahavajrarajadhita had been unconscious due to a cardiac condition and had been receiving medical treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, since 15 December 2022.

Since 21 May 2026, Her Royal Highness’s condition had deteriorated due to an abdominal infection caused by inflammation of the large intestine. The Princess also suffered from low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, and abnormalities in blood coagulation.
