SATS is investing S$250mn to upgrade its Singapore Hub (SG Hub) operations at Changi Airport, with a focus on modernising ground support and cargo handling infrastructure, as announced on 15 May (Thursday).
More than S$150mn will go into renewing and expanding its fleet of ground support equipment over the next five years — these specialised vehicles play a key role in keeping airport operations running smoothly.
An additional S$100mn will be used over the next two years to enhance cargo capabilities. These strategic upgrades are designed to boost operational reliability, improve turnaround times, and accommodate growing cargo volumes well into the mid-2030s, aligning with the anticipated launch of Changi’s Terminal 5 and the Changi East Industrial Zone. For SATS, this move not only reinforces its commitment to the Changi ecosystem but also reflects the global significance of the Singapore Air Hub to its business.
Here is a breakdown of the timeframe in for SATS in the upcoming years:
2025 to 2029:
The GSE fleet modernisation project commenced on 1 April 2025 and involves the renewal and refurbishment of over 500 specialised commercial vehicles and equipment, which is about 40% of SG Hub’s current GSE motorised fleet, and the addition of over 100 new units to support growing business volumes.
2025 to 2026:
SG Hub will bolster cargo operations across its airfreight terminals to address growing volumes, with a multi-phase enhancement beginning from the middle of this year.
As part of its transformation efforts, SG Hub is looking to through attract fresh talent to its 7,800-strong workforce. Alongside infrastructure and technology upgrades, the focus is on building a resilient workforce through job redesign, upskilling, and the adoption of tools like autonomous vehicles and AI to support productivity. These efforts aim to ensure SG Hub remains prepared for future traffic growth at Singapore’s airports.
Henry Low, Chief Executive Officer, SATS Singapore Hub, said: "The multi-million-dollar investments by SATS Singapore Hub mark an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to future-proof Singapore’s aviation ground handling and cargo operations.
"While the opening of Changi Airport Terminal 5 is about 10 years away, SATS is already undertaking extensive preparations to handle future operational demands by modernising our equipment and infrastructure alongside efforts to raise and sustain a future-ready and resilient workforce.
