Police will deploy traffic controls around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC, and Sunway Velocity, while Putrajaya’s Core Island and five major bridges will be closed from 30-31 August for ongoing celebrations.
Thousands of people are expected to head out for this year's Malaysia National Day festivities, fireworks, and public events over the Merdeka weekend. If you are travelling to Kuala Lumpur or Putrajaya, it is worth allowing extra time for your journey as police step up security measures and introduce traffic diversions around key celebration areas.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will implement security and traffic-control operations for the 69th Merdeka Celebration at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, on 30 August 2026, followed by the 69th National Day Celebration at Dataran Putrajaya on 31 August 2026.
In Putrajaya, around 80,000 visitors are expected, with 2,357 police officers and personnel deployed to manage security and traffic throughout the celebrations.
Security operations in Kuala Lumpur
In Kuala Lumpur, police will focus on public hotspots and gathering areas as part of crime-prevention operations during the celebrations.
Traffic control will be in place around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Sunway Velocity, where large crowds are expected. Visitors heading into the city for fireworks and the planned drone show at Kuala Lumpur Tower are advised to check their travel arrangements before setting off.
Putrajaya road closures
A number of road closures will be introduced in Putrajaya for rehearsals and the main National Day event.
During the skeleton rehearsal from 26 to 28 August, Persiaran Perdana will be fully closed from Jalan Kemerdekaan to Lebuh Bestari.
On 28 and 29 August, from 6am to 12noon, the following roads will be closed:
- Persiaran Putra
- Persiaran Perdana
- Persiaran Dataran Wawasan
- Jalan P2A
- Jalan P2T
- Jalan P2S
- Jalan P2W
- Jalan P2Y
A more extensive closure will begin at 5am on 30 August and remain in effect until 6pm on 31 August, covering Putrajaya’s “Core Island” area.
The following bridges will be closed during this period:
- Seri Wawasan Bridge
- Seri Saujana Bridge
- Seri Gemilang Bridge
- Putra Bridge
- Seri Ehsan Bridge
According to police, Seri Bestari Bridge and Seri Setia Bridge will remain open.
Drone flights prohibited in Putrajaya
The public is also reminded that Putrajaya is a prohibited area for drone flights during National Day preparations and celebrations, which run from 25 to 31 August.
Police said that drone operators must obtain approval from the relevant authorities. Strict action may be taken against anyone who flies a drone without permission under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016.
Don’t be alarmed by cannon salutes
Residents in Putrajaya and the surrounding areas may hear cannon shots on 29 August and 31 August. The salutes, carried out by the Malaysian Armed Forces, are part of the official programme.
They will take place at Lot 3C1, Precinct 3, at the Putrajaya Ramadan Bazaar site:
- 29 August, 8am: Two cannon shots during the full rehearsal
- 31 August, 8am: Fourteen cannon shots on National Day
Plan ahead and use public transport
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and use the free shuttle bus service where available. The latest public-transport information will be shared through Putrajaya Corporation’s official social-media channels.
Police have also advised attendees to follow all security instructions, avoid bringing prohibited or dangerous items, keep an eye on their belongings and avoid parking in restricted areas or anywhere that could obstruct traffic.
