Located within the Automotive High Tech Valley in Tanjung Malim, Perak, the plant is expected to be operational by November 2025.
Proton Malaysia launched its first assembly plant exclusive for electric vehicle (EV) production in the country at Proton Tanjung Malim, Perak, on 4 September 2025. Beyond producing Malaysia’s first EVs, the facility is set to generate over 200 new jobs in EV industrialisation and technical services for the local community.
Located within the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), the 5.57-acre site will begin full-scale operations this month with the assembly of the Proton e.MAS 7, followed by the e.MAS 5. To prepare for the ramp-up, Proton has already added 30 employees in critical operational and technical roles, all of whom have been fully trained for EV production.
The new facility, built with an investment of RM82mn, combines advanced automation with highly skilled operators and has an annual capacity of 20,000 units, scalable up to 45,000. This expansion potential aims to ensure continued opportunities for job creation and skills development as demand grows.
“The launch of this state-of-the-art EV plant marks a historic milestone for PROTON and Malaysia’s automotive industry. This facility, built with advanced technology and a focus on scalability, will be the backbone of our commitment to producing world-class electric vehicles. The Proton e.MAS 7, which has already been embraced by Malaysian consumers, is just the beginning of our journey towards a sustainable future,” said Dr. Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.
“With Zhejiang Geely Holding Group's support over nearly a decade, we witnessed technology transfer, local talent development and strategic investments that are important for the country's progress,” commented Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a Facebook post.
In a separate Facebook post, Tengku Zafrul, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, noted that the number of individuals joining the Proton workforce in has increased from 1,600 in 2023 to 4,000 in July 2025.
"The construction of PROTON's new R&D Center is scheduled to be completed by September 2025, and PROTON's EV installation plant, which is expected to be operational by November 2025, will also contribute to an increase in the workforce," he added.
