"Even someone who doesn't have the aspiration to climb the corporate ladder, we as L&D have to help coach them to do their current job in the future because the skill sets to do the same job will change," says Eli Wong, head of HR, Malaysia & Singapore, Maersk.
She adds: "You have to ask three things. What’s in it for the employee when they come for training? What’s in it for the company? Why is the company having the training? Why is the company having the training? Is the company not doing well or are they preparing for the future?"
"There is no one best way to learning and development, you can't just copy and paste the programmes, " says Neema Mehta, talent, learning & development director, Amcor. "As the company evolves, needs evolve. Don’t assume what worked for you 5 years ago is going to work for you now. Businesses evolve and you have to evolve along with it."

We now have Amit Saxena, head of HR, Recron Malaysia on stage to share tips on creating a constructive coaching programme to aid the development of employees.
Next up, we have Cilia Rasasegram, general manager, people & culture, iCar Asia on stage to share about how applying a positive thought process in the workplace can help make it successful.
"A positive thought process allows us to clearly evaluate the situation or problem at hand. It energises us to overcome any obstacle faced," she says.
We now welcome Amita Nandi, senior consultant & master trainer, DDI to share the secrets to reaping maximum returns from your L&D initiatives.
"If we listen to the learner, and take stock of what engages them and helps them learn better, we can close the gap between learning and performance," she says.
"People like to say that we need the manager around, but what exactly is manager involvement?" she asks.
"Manager involvement is not just making time for the staff to go, or not disturbing them during the training programme; it’s the manager knowing the programme, so that when the manager can discuss the training with the employees, encourage them to go for the training as well as allow them to use the skills they have learnt," she explains.

"Communication is very important. One thing I find very useful is that we communicate back to employees what has transpired during the decision making process, after we involve in the in the problem solving process," says Joanne Loong, senior manager, HR, Coca-Cola Bottlers.
"In the future, the role of managers is to facilitate. Then, the role of HR also changes to a facilitator and an enabler, and less of transactional work," says Adeline Looi, head of talent & organization development, Nestle.
We now have Manish Arneja, global organisational development manager, Fonterra giving useful tips on how to devise the right employee strategy to increase level of employee engagement.
"Managers can account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement levels," he points out.

"The philosophy of learning is: do, fail, learn, un-learn, and re-learn," he says.
Animesh Mukherjee, head of human resource centre expertise, Digi Telecommunications kickstarts the day with a keynote on learning for the future and HR's role in the journey.
"HR’s job is not to do what the C-suite is asking of us, but to look forward and guide the C-suite on what they should do in the future," he says.

"To me, culture is an unconscious day-to-day business. It is not culture when we try to show it or if we have to be mindful of it," he says.

Engaging the 'disengaged learner' is one of the most challenging tasks for learning and development heads. Next up, Perdeep Kumar, regional director, corporate learning, Harvard Business Publishing sheds light on how to design a learning programme that cuts through distraction and engages learners.
"Learning is best if your leaders are engaged. How do you engage your leaders in learning? A story is the only way to activate parts of a listener’s brain so that the listener turns the story into their own idea and experience," he explains.
After Lunch, Sasidharan Muniandy, senior manager – talent management, Scomi Energy Services takes the stage to talk about how HR can build a strategy to identify, develop & retain high potentials.
"High potentials are categorised across different categories - those who are able to progress through multiple roles in a short span of time, and those who need a bit more tracking. You have to look at their aspiration, ability, and engagement," he explains.

"Many organisations are stuck at level 2. They want to move to level 4 but they don’t have the basics in place. Whatever stage you are in, it has to be in the context of your organisation," he notes.

"Do we see continuous learning as something we want to experience? We need to ask ourselves what motivates us and makes us come to work everyday," says Chan Hoon Chuah, head of HR global business services, DHL.
"In my years of experience, human beings like to grow. Look beyond the programmes, it’s really about the journey, and the culture," Chan adds.
"For employees, learning really goes back to the million dollar question - 'what’s in it for me?' We need to chart out the journey for employees and help them develop themselves in line with their needs as well as the organisation's needs," says Sona Siti Zawina Don Najib, manager, talent development & learning, Media Prima.

We now welcome PwC's head of learning & development, Ling Hsern Wei to share about PwC's journey of bringing learning into the workplace as well as the challenges and opportunities to look out for.
"Why do we spend so much time on the event when the journey is more important? And are we willing to spend as much on the journey as the event?," questions Ling on the time and effort devoted to the learning approach.
Neema Mehta, talent, learning & development director, Amcor kickstarts the conference with a keynote on the tips and tricks on how a global business can deliver effective learning outcomes.
"What does effective learning mean in your organisation? That answer will define how and why you implement learning," Mehta says.
Concluding her presentation, Mehta says: "Global programmes are great for consistency but know who your target audience, is, how they will benefit from this and know why this is important.
"Asia is a different market and maturity in the business will impact how global programmes are received and should be implemented.
"Localisation is good and necessary but you want to make sure it is aligned to global programmes.
"Vendor relationships are key."
