What makes a modern leader, and how have the most sought-after characteristics evolved over time?
In that vein, what new skills do leaders require to influence and motivate the modern workforce?
Welcome to Episode 1 of our Modern Leadership podcast series, brought to you by HRO and Coursera, in which we tackle these questions together with Gerard Koh, Vice President, People & Culture, NCS, and Raghav Gupta, Managing Director, Coursera APAC.
Based in Singapore and leading the HR function, Gerard works closely with the NCS senior leadership team to develop and deliver the people strategy, to support the technology services firm's growth and transformation to a global digital solutions partner. This includes strategic workforce planning, skills transformation, leadership development, organisation culture, and HR Future of Work technology and processes.
Gerard is also a change agent, mandated to drive the transformation of NCS' human capital development, organisation structure, and culture. An ardent fan of Liverpool football club, Gerard believes its motto "You'll never walk alone" rings true in life.
Over in India, Raghav is the lead for Coursera in APAC, responsible for growing the online learning provider's consumer and enterprise business in the region, bringing education to learners across markets. He comes with 20 years of experience across consumer, internet, and management consulting industries in India, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
In this episode, titled The state of leadership: Most sought-after characteristics of a modern leader, hosted by HRO's Aditi Sharma Kalra, Gerard and Raghav discuss:
- Why being grounded is so important in being a 'great' leader;
- The concept of 'systems leadership': how to identify the patterns when challenges arise, and the wider system they belong to, in order to find solutions and operate better in a VUCA environment;
- Steps NCS is taking to ensure its leadership thrives (and helps the workforce thrive) amidst a mixed working environment;
- The most significant areas of leadership that we need to be focusing on, and more.
