The Hong Kong government announced yesterday that it will ease some social distancing measures as the number of confirmed cases has dropped to low double digits. The new rules take effect on 28 August "unless there are drastic changes to the epidemic situation".

Cinemas, beauty parlours and some sports venues will reopen on Friday. In addition, the dine-in services at restaurants will extend from 6pm to 9pm, even though the cap on the number of people remains at two.

The government will also lift mandatory mask wearing for outdoor sports and at country parks.

“If a group of people go hiking and the physical activities are not that vigorous, I think it’s still better to put on a mask,” said Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection.

Secretary for Food and Health, Sophia Chan, said the reason the government decided to lift some rules are that the number of daily cases had been "gradually declining" and the officials understand that the public is experiencing "anti-epidemic fatigue".

Hong Kong recorded 19 new cases on Tuesday, bring the city's tally to 4710.
