Such a deal, if it were to go ahead, could result in a single dominant player in Hong Kong’s grocery retail market.

Jardine Matheson is reportedly in discussions with CK Hutchison Holdings over a possible merger between city’s supermarket giants – ParknShop and Wellcome.

According to the Financial Times, the potential megadeal could see ParknShop acquired and merged with Wellcome. People familiar with the matter were cited saying that talks have been underway for some time, though no deal is imminent and valuation details have not been disclosed.

The report likened the potential transaction to Tesco acquiring Sainsbury’s in the UK, or Walmart merging with Costco in the US. Such a deal, if it were to go ahead, could result in a single dominant player in Hong Kong’s grocery retail market.

Wellcome and ParknShop are two of Hong Kong’s largest supermarket chains, with long‑standing market presence. Founded in 1945, Wellcome has been wholly owned by DFI Retail Group, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, since 1964. Together with Market Place, 3hreesixty, and Oliver's, Wellcome operates more than 320 stores across Hong Kong, serving over 13mn customers each month.

ParknShop, meanwhile, is part of AS Watson Group under CK Hutchison Holdings. Established in 1972, the brand operates more than 240 stores across Hong Kong and Macau under banners including FUSION, TASTE, TASTE x FRESH, FOOD PARC, and GREAT FOOD HALL.

Combined, the two chains accounted for nearly 90% of Hong Kong’s supermarket market share in 2023, according to data from Euromonitor cited by the US Foreign Agricultural Service as reported. However, amidst intensifying competition in recent years, one source involved in the talks suggested internal assessments put the effective share of a merged entity at below 50%.

Based on official figures, Wellcome employs around 7,000 people in Hong Kong, while ParknShop has approximately 10,000 employees across Hong Kong and Macau.
