Fidelity International was a gold winner of Excellence in Innovative Use of HR Tech at the HR Distinction Awards 2020. The firm is committed to leveraging the latest technology to transform its recruiting process. Louis Ng, early careers recruiting lead, shares the company’s story of launching the video interviewing tool Vieple.
What challenges did you face with your recruiting process?
We receive close to 8000 applications globally for our early careers programmes every year. It’s challenging to screen and shortlist a high volume of candidates, especially with a tight timeframe.
Phone interview were the most time-consuming task since it involved a lot of administrative work particularly with scheduling between the candidates, business stakeholders and HR. Also, we were only able to arrange a small number of interviews given the limited resources and availability of the teams. Therefore, most candidates were not assessed further – meaning we might have missed some talent from the pool.
How does video interviewing work?
Under this new process, candidates are invited to complete a video interview through Vieple if they have successfully passed the online tests. They are given five days to do the assessment and they will record their answers on 5-6 pre-determined questions to be completed at their own pace before the deadline.
This is different to the traditional phone interview since we no longer need to schedule a specific date and time. It provides a lot of flexibility for candidates, especially Millennials, as they are used to taking videos through their mobile device. From a selection perspective, we can assign anyone from the team to review the videos and score them accordingly. CVs will not be provided to the reviewers, to remove any bias, and assessment is purely based on the videos.
What does Fidelity International intend to do to build on this success?
We plan to expand the use of Vieple from early careers recruiting into experienced hiring since it often involves a high volume of vacancies.
We will also leverage Vieple further in our student engagement activities, rather than just interviews. An example is our flagship initiative – the Fidelity International Academy (FIA) – which we introduced as a tool for team presentation.
