Yet another worker killed at a building site

A worker was killed after being pinned between two pieces of construction equipment at a worksite in Jurong last Sunday.

The Indian national was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and initial investigations by the Ministry of Manpower revealed he was inspecting a boom lift when it unexpectedly moved and pinned him against a crawler crane.

He is believed to have died from severe injuries to his head. Investigations are still ongoing, and the construction firm involved, Eng Lee Engineering, has been advised to stop using mobile elevated work platforms.

This is the 13th worksite fatality reported this year, The Straits Times reported, with seven accidents occurring in January alone.

Earlier this year, Acting Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin said he was “appalled” at the number of workplace accidents, re-emphasising it is the “basic responsibility” of employers to ensure their workers’ safety.

On January 22, two Bangladeshis workers fell to their death at a construction site, and a Chinese worker died after falling 19 stories at a separate site the next day. On January 28, a worker also fell to his death after a structure he was standing on collapsed, with a secondary structure at another site on Sentosa also collapsing and killing one workers, injuring 10 more.
