Work activities should not take time away from families, employers urged

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin commented on the importance of work-life balance at an event organised by Mediacorp, Dads' Day Out on Sunday 17 June, Today reported. He touched on the busy schedules of a majority of fathers and how employers can assist their employees in maintaining a balance between work and families.

Tan suggested that employers can organise work activities at 6pm rather than 7.30pm to give employees ample time to reach home before their children go to bed. He also proposed that it would be opportune to organise work activities during lunchtime, adding that this would also be cheaper.

He touched on how fatherhood is more than just supporting the family financially, but also spending time with them to build a meaningful relationship.

"That's immeasurable because what it does is that it makes our children feel loved, secure, confident, and I think that gives us a very strong basis for them to grow up,” he said.

As a Member of Parliament for the Marine Parade constituency, his message seeks to encourage employers to empathise with their employees in helping to maintain a work-life balance.
