This group will now receive KWSP and PERKESO contributions and serve under contract. Further, their working hours will not exceed the limit of 45 hours per week defined by the Employment Act.
Deputy Minister for Human Resources Malaysia Dato' Sri Abdul Rahman bin Haji Mohamad announced on 2 September that the supervisors and officers of the Rehabilitation Center in Communities (PPDK) are now recognised as employees under the Labour Act 1955, qualifying them to receive labour law protection like any other worker in the country.
PPDK, which is registered with the Department of Registration of Organisations Malaysia (ROS), plays an important role in the rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (OKU). These centers receive annual operational assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), while their supervisors and officers are appointed by PPDK management.
In a Facebook post by KESUMA, DPM Abdul explained that based on the review, supervisors receive a salary of RM1,500 per month while officers receive RM1,200 per month. They also get KWSP and PERKESO contributions and serve under contract. He also asserted that their working hours do not exceed the limit of 45 hours per week permitted by the Employment Act.
"In principle, PPDK supervisors and officers are now considered legal workers entitled to minimum wage and other welfare protections."
KESUMA stated that through the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Labour (JTKSM), it will monitor the compliance of labour laws, while the Ministry of Women, Family and Society Development (KPWKM) will manage the welfare aspect of workers.
"This step reflects the government's commitment in upholding the core of Welfare and Social Justice under MADANI Malaysia, in order to ensure the rights of these frontline workers continue to be preserved," the Ministry added.
