Success for senior professionals in Singapore means earning a high salary and having a family.
That was the key finding of LinkedIn’s recent study, which found 60% of senior staff in the country believe having a high income is the top benchmark for success.
Defining senior staff as professionals with more than 11 years of experience, the report found those respondents in Singapore who rated having a high income as their top accomplishment outnumbered their counterparts in Asia Pacific (51%).
Having a family was the next top measure of success (56%), followed by owning a house (39%).
“As these professionals advance in their careers and take on senior roles, the desire for stability and recognition is a common denominator,” Hari Krishnan, managing director, Asia Pacific and Japan at LinkedIn, said.
“However, as they continuously strive for the tangibles - a steady income or a strong family unit - they should consider leveraging softer skills to achieve their goals.”

Despite citing having a family as a top accomplishment, Singapore was highlighted as the country with the largest number of senior professionals in Asia Pacific who said that leaving work to start a family was difficult (40%). This was followed by respondents in India (36%), Hong Kong (35%) and Australia (20%).
In addition, senior professionals in Singapore were also cited as the group having the most difficulty with a transition from full-time to part-time work (44%). Professionals in Hong Kong came in second place (39%), followed by India (38%), while those in Australia (26%) found it the least difficult.
More than a third (35%) of the senior professionals in Singapore also said that they would find it hard to take a sabbatical from work.
“Senior professionals in Hong Kong also displayed a slightly different set of priorities as they rose up the ranks,” the report stated.
“Becoming an entrepreneur (50%) was found to be the number two measure of success along with high income (53%).”
