Selangor declares 25 October 2026 a public holiday to mark Sultan’s 25th year on the throne

The Sunday holiday will be voluntary for private-sector employers, but those that observe it must provide a replacement day if it falls on employees’ rest day.

Employees in Selangor can potentially look forward to an additional public holiday on 25 October 2026 (Sunday), marking the 25th anniversary of the reign of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Sultan of Selangor.

The Selangor State Government has declared the date a public holiday under Section 9(1) of the Offenses Act 1951 [Act 369], which allows the state government to declare any day as a public holiday in the state.

However, the holiday will not automatically apply as a paid public holiday to all private-sector employees.

According to the Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM), 25 October is a voluntary public holiday for private-sector employers in Selangor.

This means the holiday is mandatory only for employers that choose to declare the Selangor State Public Holiday as one of their paid public holidays.

What employers need to know

For employers that observe the holiday, the fact that it falls on a Sunday also affects the replacement day.

Employers whose employees have Sunday as their rest day must provide a replacement public holiday on Monday, 26 October 2026, in accordance with Section 60D(1) of the Labour Act 1955.

Alternatively, employers may agree with their employees to replace the paid public holiday with another day, as provided under Section 60D(1A) of the Labour Act 1955.

Employers in Selangor should therefore review their paid public holiday arrangements and communicate clearly with employees on whether the 25 October holiday will be observed and, where applicable, when the replacement day will be given.
