Meta plans to cut about 10% of its workforce as it shifts focus to generative AI

Responding to HRO's queries, a spokesperson declined to comment on the regions and job roles affected.

Tech giant Meta is looking to lay off about 10% of its workforce â€“ making up around 8,000 employees as it continues to focus its investments on AI, according to a CNBC report.

Citing Bloomberg, which first broke the news, the report said the cuts will begin on 20 May 2026, and that Meta is "scrapping plans to hire people for 6,000 open roles."

Responding to HRO's queries, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that the Bloomberg report was accurate, and declined to comment on the regions and job roles affected.

As further reported â€“ and also confirmed by the spokesperson, the company said the latest move was necessary as it looks to "improve efficiency while focusing its efforts on generative AI."

According to updates last month, Meta was said to be considering layoffs that could affect 20% or more of its workforce for this reason, which was expected to be the company's largest round of layoffs since its "year of efficiency" restructuring in late 2022 and early 2023.

Per its latest filing at the time of reporting, Meta employed 78,865 as of December 31, 2025.
