Malaysian staff not spending enough time with family

Long hours in the office are getting in the way of Malaysian employees' quality time with family.

According to a survey by Jobstreet.com, 63% of Malaysians have not been spending enough time with their families, with about 70% reporting they work an extra two to five hours every day.

Because of this, companies need to help employees better manage their time, as work-life balance can be a huge driver in engaging and motivating staff, Chook Yuh Yng, country manager for Jobstreet.com, said in a statement.

The survey, which polled 954 employees across various industries in Malaysia, found the biggest reasons people work longer hours were unreasonable deadlines, an overload of work, as well as pressure to complete their tasks.

Three quarters of respondents added they stayed in the office to complete their work, despite a majority admitting they were not being paid for extra hours.

More than half of respondents (54%) said they have not fully utilised their annual leave, and 78% make sure their bosses are able to contact them on their mobile phones at all times.

It is little surprise then that a majority of respondents believe companies have to be better at offering work-life balance.

One of the suggestions was for companies to encourage employees to work less than 40 hours a week, rather than enforcing a nine-to-six rule.
