The introduction of the 10-year passport is expected to reduce the frequency of renewals, saving time and streamlining both domestic and international travel arrangements.
Malaysia will begin issuing a new version of the Malaysian international passport from 1 July 2026 (Wednesday), introducing enhanced security features, upgraded digital capabilities, and, for the first time, a 10-year validity option for eligible applicants.
As reported by Bernama, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister unveiled the new passport at the Parliament Lobby, where Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, Immigration director-general presented him with the first new passport during a ceremonial handover. Also present were Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Home Minister and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Member of Parliament for Bandar Tun Razak.
Strengthening security, digital capabilities, and global confidence
According to the Immigration Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia, or JIM), the upgraded passport has been developed around three key priorities:
- strengthening the security of Malaysia's travel documents,
- supporting digital technology in line with current developments,
- and increasing international confidence in the Malaysian passport.
JIM has advised Malaysians not to rush to replace their existing passports. Current passports remain valid and can continue to be used until they have six months or less remaining before expiry, meaning there is no immediate need to switch to the new version.
JIM added that the passport comes equipped with 94 security features.
According to the Home Ministry, the introduction of the new passport design represents a significant transformation in enhancing the security of the nation's travel document, while also offering greater convenience and added value to the public.
International Air Transport Association (IATA), Malaysia's passport currently ranks ninth globally.
Applications begin from 1 July
Starting 1 July 2026, Malaysia citizens aged 18 and above can apply for the new passport, with the option of choosing either a five-year or 10-year validity period.
The Home Ministry said the introduction of the 10-year passport is expected to reduce the frequency of renewals, saving time and streamlining both domestic and international travel arrangements.
The fee for the passport with a 10-year validity period is RM350, while that for the five-year passport remains RM200. According to the ministry, the introduction of the 10-year option effectively gives applicants a RM50 saving.
To ensure a smooth operational transition, the rollout of the new passport will be implemented in phases across 71 passport offices nationwide starting in July.
