Malaysia extends Xpats Gateway system to include more sectors

Upon obtaining a letter from the respective agencies, the employer can continue with the application for the final decision by the Immigration Department of Malaysia.

The Expatriate Services Division (ESD) of Malaysia has extended the Xpats Gateway system to include more sectors, effective 31 July 2023 (Monday).

Following its initial launch on 15 June 2023, the Xpats Gateway system aims to shorten the work permit application process for expatriates. The system streamlines the governance process of approval for Employment Pass (EP) applications, with visa applications and approvals expected to be shortened to five days.

With the latest update, employers under the purview of the following agencies and ministries can now apply for a support letter for their expatriate hiring through the Xpats Gateway system from 31 July 2023:

Upon obtaining a letter from the respective agencies, the employer can continue with the application for the final decision by the Immigration Department of Malaysia via the ESD Online. For sectors not listed above, employers may obtain their support letters directly from respective agencies as usual, until the full implementation of Xpats Gateway.

It also should be noted that for other sectors not under the purview of agencies, the employers can apply their expatriate applications directly to ESD Online.

To review the latest developments in the expansion of Xpats Gateway, a working visit to TalentCorp was held on 31 July 2023, led by Secretary General of the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR ) Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini bin Ujang. Speaking at the event, Thomas Mathew, Group Chief Executive Officer, TalentCorp noted that the cross-ministry and agency collaboration will further strengthen Malaysia's position as a highly skilled talent hub.
