Malaysia elected to UNESCO Executive Board for 2025 to 2029 term

As part of its new mandate, Malaysia aims to contribute actively to strengthening multilateral cooperation, advancing knowledge, and harnessing science and innovation for sustainability.

Malaysia has secured a seat on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Executive Board for the 2025 to 2029 term. The election took place on 7 November 2025 during the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Malaysia received 167 votes, the highest in its electoral group, and won one of six seats allocated to Group IV. This marks the country’s seventh term on the Executive Board since becoming a Member State in 1958.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia’s election reflects the country’s ongoing role and leadership in advancing international collaboration across education, science, and culture. It also aligns with the aspirations of ASEAN Vision 2045 and UNESCO’s global priorities.

The appointment is said to complement Malaysia’s active participation in two key UNESCO subsidiary bodies, namely the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022 to 2026) and the Intergovernmental Council of the Hydrological Programme (2023 to 2027).

As part of its new mandate, Malaysia aims to contribute actively to strengthening multilateral cooperation, advancing knowledge, and harnessing science and innovation for sustainability. The country also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage for the benefit of all.

Malaysia expressed appreciation to all UNESCO Member States for their support and cooperation. The Ministry of Education, together with the Office of the Permanent Delegation of Malaysia to UNESCO in Paris, will represent Malaysia during the Executive Board proceedings.
