Malaysia elected to APCTT Governing Council for 2026-2029 term

Malaysia elected to APCTT Governing Council for 2026-2029 term

The appointment places Malaysia among eight countries that will play a key role in reshaping regional cooperation on technology transfer, innovation, and sustainable development across APAC.

Malaysia has been elected to the Governing Council of the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) for the 2026-2029 term.

The election took place during the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) on 21 April 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. Sharing the update on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Malaysia was one of eight countries selected to serve on the council.

The other seven countries are: Republic of Korea, Philippines, Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Russia.

Operating under UNESCAP, the APCTT plays a key role in strengthening technical cooperation among member states. Its work focuses on promoting technology sharing and building capabilities in science, technology, and innovation (STI), in support of sustainable development across the region.

Malaysia, represented by its Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, has served on the council before. It held three previous terms from 2006 to 2009, 2014 to 2017, and 2017 to 2020, since the centre was established in 1977.

As a regional institution, the APCTT supports 53 member states and nine associate members of UNESCAP. It works to create an enabling environment for the adoption, diffusion, and commercialisation of new and emerging technologies.

Its efforts are anchored on three key outcomes: fostering technology innovation and scaling up emerging technologies; strengthening policies and connecting technology seekers, providers, and financing, and promoting cross-border collaboration, capacity building, and networks.

The centre delivers its support through two main tracks:

  • The first focuses on on-demand interventions, providing technical assistance, policy advice, and capacity building tailored to member states’ needs in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The second track centres on targeted areas such as climate-related technologies, including renewable energy transition, pollution control, climate-resilient infrastructure, as well as digital and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.

MOFA said Malaysia will continue to support the APCTT’s work and stay actively involved in strengthening its role within UNESCAP.
