Day 2

That brings us to the end of Talent Management Asia 2017, Hong Kong. Hope all of you had a great time and managed to bring home a few key takeaways from the conference. Thank you once again to all our speakers, delegates and sponsors, and we do hope to see you again next year.

For our final session of the day, Debbie Mannas, group head of human resources, Wallem Group shares her view on the future of talent in Hong Kong.

Mannas starts off her presentation by telling the room: “Talent is the new black. Suddenly everyone is talking about it. But it was always here.”

Panel TMA2017

Henham asks the panel what it is that the C-suit is expecting from HR teams today, apart from talent management. Lee says: "Succesion planning is one of the first things I look for. I'm the leader of the company now, but what about in eight years time?"

He adds: "I need to know who the candidates are that could succeed me. Additionally, they may be quite young. So how do we get them ready?"

Both Cohen and Tay point toward the importance of creating a company culture and HR's key role in this.

"For the first few years, a key challenge was to really build up a culture that people would identify with and that was in keeping with the founders' values," Cohen shares. "HR had a key role in this."

As we take a break, we'd like to thank Talent Management Asia 2017 gold sponsors, Alexander Mann Solutions and Cubiks-GraduACE.

Now on stage, we have Jeff Lam, director, organization and talent development - Asia Pacific at Starbucks Coffee Company. He speaks to the delegates about the role top management can and should play in talent management and development.

He explains the importance of leadership is so ingrained in the company culture, even newly promoted supervisors understand their role is critical to creating a great employee experience.

"When we talk about a role, it often sounds like a duty," he tells the delegates. "But from what I observe in Starbucks, our leaders don't see it as as duty. It's more a way of being that makes the Starbucks culture come to life."

Henry Lee, managing director, Sony Corporation of Hong Kong, kickstarts the conference with a keynote on Sony's talent strategy and the "Kando" spirit.

"Empowerment is important. Knowing that they're becoming a valuable employee, not just a fresh graduate," he tells the delegates with regards to managing young potential.

"If they're passionate about the brand, they're less likely to give up when they encounter difficulties," he adds.

To inaugurate day one of Talent Management Asia, Hong Kong editor of Human Resources magazine, Anthony Wong takes the stage to welcome all delegates, sponsors and speakers.
