At the break of dusk yesterday, Muslim workers at Lendlease’s Paya Lebar Quarter broke fast with Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC and the Paya Lebar Quarter’s senior executives of over a communal nasi ambeng Iftar dinner.
According to a media release, this year’s celebrations extended to the 1,200-strong workforce at Paya Lebar Quarter, who also enjoyed a sumptuous dinner catered specially for this joyous occasion.
This special event to commemorate Ramadhan is the second consecutive large-scale celebration Lendlease has organised as part of its continuing efforts towards fostering workplace diversity and enhancing health and wellbeing initiatives amongst migrant workers.
Prior to the festivities, community leaders and the 10 senior executives from Lendlease engaged in a live cook-out preparing Gado Gado to thank the workers for their hard work and dedication.
“Ramadhan is a time of reflection, communal bonding and generosity. Muslim workers make up more than 50 per cent of our workforce at Paya Lebar Quarter and many of them are far away from their families and loved ones during this time,” said Richard Paine, managing director, Paya Lebar Quarter by Lendlease.
Pointing out that Lendlease is built on a culture of care and beyond celebrating their contributions, he said: “this is an opportunity for us to take on a proactive role in planning recreational activities for our migrant community to meet their social and cultural needs.”
“With Paya Lebar Quarter being a development in the heart of a precinct that is deeply rooted in community spirit and heritage, we are also extending the celebrations to the wider community by contributing to the sponsorship for this year’s Hari Raya Light Up, led by Kembangan-Chai Chee Constituency,” Paine added.
Extra measures taken to ensure worker wellbeing during the fasting month
With majority of the 3.9-hectare site’s workforce consisting of Muslim workers, during the fasting month, Lendlease ensures that extra measures are put in place so that workers who are fasting have adequate rest and sufficient food and drinks.
Throughout the month, Muslim workers at Paya Lebar Quarter are given the option to take the evening shift where possible instead of working during the day, and are provided with supplementary mineral salts to aid rehydration. They are also provided with special stickers on their hard hats so colleagues are more conscious of their safety and wellbeing whilst on site.
The site also has a biometric system in place to ensure that workers get adequate rest by preventing access to those who have worked the maximum amount of hours allowed each week. This is on top of the regular dormitory visits conducted to review living conditions of workers, and various health and wellbeing initiatives onsite such as a canteen with onsite cooks, sheltered and well-ventilated rest areas with clean shower facilities and regular health check-ups.
Nasi ambeng, a traditional Javanese sharing dish, shared among four to six people, is made up of rice with different meat and vegetable dishes, served on huge platters.
Gado Gado is a popular Indonesian salad consisting of a rich mixture of slightly boiled, blanched or steamed vegetables and hard boiled eggs tossed with potatoes, tempeh (deep-fried fermented soya beans) and lontong (traditional rice cakes) mixed in a peanut sauce dressing and topped with keropok (vegetable crackers) and sprinkles of fried shallots.
