In a statement to Human Resources, tech major IBM has confirmed that the manufacturing of IBM Power Systems is moving from its Tampines plant in Singapore to IBM Guadalajara, Mexico, “as part of IBM’s continual review of the most efficient way to source our products”.
“Given the competitive nature of our business, we do not publicly discuss the details of our staffing plans,” said an IBM spokesperson. However, IBM has confirmed that this development impacts only Power Systems manufacturing.
“System Z manufacturing will continue in Singapore. In addition to System Z manufacturing, Singapore will retain global manufacturing oversight responsibilities for select IBM internal and third-party contract manufacturing operations,” IBM has clarified.
In addition, IBM has confirmed to Human Resources that “outplacement support and guidance was offered to all affected employees”.
At the moment, no decision has been made concerning the future use of the space to be vacated. “IBM continually assesses optimum space utilisation for its operations,” stated the company.
Apart from System Z manufacturing in Singapore, which remains a strategic location for IBM (including management, cloud, software, blockchain, Watson and services organisations), other IBM investments in the nation include HQ of its APAC operations and ASEAN region, IBM Studios Singapore, IBM Centre of Blockchain Innovation, among others.
