What employees are googling amid increased home working

Since February, the Hong Kong government and many organisations in Hong Kong have taken to the work-from-home arrangement in an ad hoc, stop-start manner. But with home working on the rise, many Hongkongers have taken the opportunity to learn something new or master their skills. 

In particular, many are hoping to better understand how to use various cloud-based collaboration tools and host video conferences efficiently.

Google Meet, Zoom, and Google Classroom have been among Google Hong Kong's top trending tutorial searches in the preceding three months, while OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), free software for video recording and live streaming, is also popular. 

In April, more than two million new users from around the globe have hosted video conferences using Google Meet every day, and they have spent a total of more than two billion minutes together.

The Vlookup function in Excel — which enables users to search data in a specific table or range by row — is in fourth place for tutorials that have gone viral on Google.

Adobe Photoshop, which is often featured as the way for jobseekers to strengthen their resume, landed in the sixth place in the ranking. 

How-to searches for financial products such as 'PayMe' and 'Option' have also gained in popularity.

Overall, Hong Kong’s hottest in the last 90 days include COVID-19-related information, tutorials, game tactics and recipes, according to Google Trends.

Search queries related to stay-home entertainment have become trending, with 'Animal Crossing' topping the chart of Top Trending Queries over the past 90 days along with Popular Google Doodle games.
