Faces of HR: Mia Lim calls for HR to take ownership of AI transformation

As automation takes on more routine work, Tala’s Director of Global Organisational Effectiveness believes HR must help redefine how people create value, rather than simply support the technology rollout.

The most rewarding days at work for Mia Lim (pictured above) are when strategy translates into something tangible. Whether it is aligning stakeholders around a clear vision, building a new policy, streamlining a workflow or developing an AI application, she enjoys seeing ideas move from strategy into action.

Her career across fintech, consulting, and FMCG has given her a broad view of how people strategy can support organisational growth. Today, as Director of Global Organisational Effectiveness at Tala, she draws on experience in people analytics, automation, cross-border team growth and total rewards to help organisations build the systems and capabilities they need to evolve.

At the heart of Mia’s approach to people leadership are three principles: context, compassion, and consistency. She believes employees engage more deeply when they understand the “why” behind decisions, are treated with empathy and dignity, and can rely on leaders to act with fairness and integrity.

Ahead of her session at Transform Talent 2026 – Philippines, Lim shares with Mary Ann Bundukin that HR must take a more active role in shaping that change — from redesigning jobs around higher-value human work, to helping people adapt and grow.

Q What does a great day at work look like for you, and how does it remind you why you love HR?

A great day is when strategy translates into something tangible. It starts with getting stakeholders aligned on a clear vision, bringing my team together to operationalise it, and ending the day having built something brand new — whether that’s a redesigned policy, a strategic roadmap, a smoother workflow automation, or a new AI application.

That’s why I love HR. At its best, it sits at the intersection of business strategy and real-world execution.

We aren't just managing day-to-day processes; we’re designing the environment, systems, and capabilities that help people and organisations thrive.

Q What's one strategy you've found most effective in keeping employees engaged and committed?

For me, it comes down to three pillars: context, compassion, and consistency.

  • Context provides the vision — grounding people in the why behind company decisions.
  • Compassion means treating people with empathy, respect, and dignity, even when you have to say no or hold the line on policy.
  • Consistency is about operating with discipline — applying principles fairly and showing up reliably.

When employees understand the bigger picture, feel respected as whole human beings, and see their leaders operating with consistent integrity, genuine engagement and trust follow naturally.

Q In three words, how would you describe your leadership philosophy?

Still context, compassion, and consistency!

I lead my team with the exact same principles I use for the wider organisation. I focus on providing my team with clear context—setting parameters, expectations, and providing resources — and then I get out of their way so they can play to their strengths.

Compassion means recognising that people are whole human beings balancing life and work. Finally, consistency means showing up with predictable integrity, making principled decisions, and setting a dependable tone every day. My goal is simple: empower capable people to do their best work.

Q Could you tell us one thing about you that people might be surprised to know?

I actually knew I wanted to go into HR as early as high school! However, my career path was far from linear. I started out as a Brand Manager at P&G and later worked as a management consultant, only transitioning into a 'mainstream' HR career about six years ago.

Looking back, those early commercial roles were the best foundation I could have asked for.

The common thread across consumer branding, consulting, and modern HR leadership has always been the same: understanding human behaviour, communicating effectively across diverse audiences, and driving meaningful organisational change.

Q As a speaker at #TransformTalentPH, what is the #1 call to action you hope for attendees to take away from your session?

HR can no longer be an order-taker — especially in the era of AI.

As routine transactional tasks become automated, HR leaders need to take full ownership of the AI transformation. We are the architects of organisation design, talent development, and people enablement. Deploying the technology is the easy part; helping people adapt and redefine how they create value is where the real work lies.

I want attendees to step into the driver’s seat: take bold ownership of your company's transformation, redesign jobs for higher-value human work, and lead the way forward.
