Bizarre HR: Best jobs for the power hungry

Do you want a job where you have absolute authority over everyone else? Here are the top six jobs that wield plenty of power – but not a lot of money.

Even though they may not earn the same salaries as other power positions such as politicians or CEOs, being a bouncer, parking inspector or airport security worker can give people the same feeling of having power over others.

Organisational psychologist Peter Langford told news.com.au that people are attracted by these sorts of roles – despite the lower pay check – because everyone enjoys power on some level.

“It's always satisfying to have some level of influence and impact on the world - those people are just after that type of thing a bit more,” he said.

The types of people who seek out these powerful roles tend to be “self focused” rather than “other focused” – in other words, they’re not going to be the most caring person, generally speaking.

“They're in there because they like the influence and they like dominating - not necessarily negatively - but they like having control and determining what others around them can do.”

But what makes people chase money and power, but only settle for power?

Elizabeth Allworth, also an organisational psychologist, told news.com.au these types of roles don’t typically require demanding conditions or knowledge for entry into the professions.

Langford agreed, saying that for some people having the power is more important than having the money.
