An HR head’s claim for exemption from jury service rejected

A jury of nine, including five women and four men, has been chosen at the High Court for the Mong Kok riot trial, according to local media.

One of the chosen women claimed to be head of human resources at a Japanese-owned electronic components company. She applied for exemption from jury service with the reason that she has to go on a business trip to Shanghai and Shenzhen next month and attend a wedding in the United States in late May.

Her exemption claim was rejected by High Court Judge Anthea Pang. Pang believes her colleagues can help with the work and the case will be completed in mid-May. Therefore, it will not affect her attendance at the wedding of her relatives at the end of May.

Localist activist and former spokesman of pro-independence group Hong Kong Indigenous Edward Leung Tin-kei, 26, and five defendants - Lee Nok-man, 20, Lo Kin-man, 29, Lam Ngo-hin, 21, Wong Ka-kui, 25, and Lam Luen-hing, 24, are accused of rioting, instigating a riot and participating in an unlawful assembly during Mong Kok riot on the night of February 8 in 2016.

The trial is expected to last around 60 days.
