10 Malaysian states on alert as tropical storm Senyar brings heavy rain and increased flood risks

Tropical storm Senyar is expected to affect western and central Peninsular Malaysia, prompting weather warnings and flood-relief measures.

Continuous heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas are expected in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor from 27 to 29 November as tropical storm Senyar approaches.

In an alert today (Thursday, 27 November), the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) said that tropical storm Senyar was located at 3.6° N 99.9° E, north of Sumatra and about 102 km southwest of Lumut, Perak. Moving east-southeast at around 24 km/h, the storm is entering the waters of the Strait of Malacca towards the west of the Peninsula.

The public is advised to follow weather forecasts and warnings through the MET Malaysia website, the myCuaca app, official social media channels, or hotline 1‑300‑22‑1638.

The storm and resulting floods have already caused disruptions. The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has temporarily closed its office in Kangar till further notice, starting 26 November due to rising flood levels. This, it said in a statement, is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of EPF members and staff.

Members with appointments have been advised to reschedule, while essential transactions can still be carried out online via i‑Akaun. EPF is coordinating with local authorities and service providers to monitor the situation. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Additionally, banks in the country are offering a range of flood-relief assistance to affected customers. In a joint statement today, The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) detailed the following measures:

  • Deferment of loan/financing instalments to provide temporary financial relief.
  • Special financing facilities to assist customers in repairing and restoring their homes and businesses.
  • Waiver of fees and charges for the replacement of lost or damaged banking documents and cards.
  • Relief and Adaptation Facility (RAFt) to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in resuming and sustaining their business operations.
  • Exchange of damaged bank notes.

Waivers for replacement of damaged documents and cards, and relief facilities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) are provided. In addition to that, banks are offering exchanges for damaged banknotes.

Customers are encouraged to contact their banks through official channels such as bank branches, websites, online banking platforms and social media accounts for accurate information, and to remain vigilant against scams.

"ABM and AIBIM member banks will continue to take necessary actions to maintain access to essential banking services in all affected areas", the statement added.
