What kind of leaders will Millennials make?

With more Millennials in the workforce, it is of no surprise to see most of them eyeing the top spot. But have you ever wondered how Millennials will be like as leaders and bosses of companies?

According to a survey by Virtuali and WorkplaceTrends.com, of the 412 Millennials polled, almost all respondents (91%) revealed that they aspire to be in the top spot one day, with 52% of them being women.

A little more of than half (63%) of these young professionals aspire to be "transformational" leaders, seeking to challenge and inspire their followers with a sense of purpose and excitement.

"Millennials embody the shift in today’s workplace. They are motivated by a desire to transform themselves, their colleagues, and the world around them. This study confirms that Millennials respond and aspire to this type of transformational leadership," said Sean Graber, co-founder and CEO of Virtuali

So, why do these Millennials want to be leaders?

Almost half of the survey's respondents defined leadership as "empowering others to succeed" with 43% of them stating that their biggest motivator to be a leader is "empowering others".

Contrary to popular belief, money (5%) and power (1%) were the least of their motivations.

Millennials remain aware, however, that they must also possess the right leadership skills in order to fulfill their desires.

More than four out of 10 (43%) of them said that their weakest leadership skill was having industry experience and 41% of them said that it was technical expertise.

"This study confirms that Millennials choose to empower others over making money or being recognised. Through technology, Millennials are equipped with what they view as the two most essential leadership skills, both communication and the ability to build relationships," said Dan Schawbel, founder of WorkplaceTrends.com and New York Times bestselling author of Promote Yourself.
