Companies wanting to attract fresh talent have to lift the barriers standing in the way of innovation.
This was one of the key findings of Deloitte’s Millennial Survey, which interviewed 7,800 millennials from 28 countries globally about business, government and innovation.
It found 78% of Millennials or Gen Y, are influenced by how innovative a company is when deciding to work there. However, most of these young adults stated their current employers fail to significantly encourage them to think creatively.
The report found Gen Ys believe the biggest stumbling blocks to innovation are management attitude (63%), operational structures and procedures (61%), and employee skills, attitudes, and the lack of diversity (39%).
Besides wanting to work for organisations which foster creative thinking, respondents also highlighted a preference for working in a corporate environment which nurtures them to become better leaders.
“Over one in four Millennials are ‘asking for a chance’ to show their leadership skills,” the report said.
With 75% of respondents stating their organisations could do more to develop future leaders and a quarter adding they are waiting for a chance to show off their leadership skills, companies looking to win the war on talent have to also focus on providing leadership development opportunities.
The survey also found Gen Ys wish to play a more active role when it comes to increasing businesses’ impact on society.
“Millennials believe the success of a business should be measured in terms of more than just its financial performance, with a focus on improving society among the most important things it should seek to achieve,” the report said.
