In support of Singapore's SkillsFuture movement, Singapore Management University (SMU) has launched its lifelong learning unit – SMU Academy, at a ceremony involving Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (higher education and skills) and Second Minister for Defence.

Helmed by Dr Lim Lai Cheng as executive director, SMU will dedicate more resources and ramp up its offering of professional continuing education programmes through the Academy for adult learners.

In particular, it will focus on the development of functional skills across industries as well as sector-customised competencies in SMU’s niches of financial services, human capital, management and leadership, and technology and intelligent systems.

SMU provost, Professor Lily Kong, commented that SMU expects to contribute significantly to adult education and lifelong learning in Singapore by establishing the SMU Academy.

Since the start of the year, the Academy has begun offering new modular courses, supported under SkillsFuture Singapore, which can be stacked towards graduate certificates or diplomas conferred by SMU, and which give credit recognition for modules relevant to SMU's existing master’s degrees.

One example is the graduate certificate in communication management and strategy which comprises modules such as digital marketing, transmedia skills and story-telling, and data analytics, which may stack up towards the master of science in communication and management programme.

SMU Academy will also award digital credentials to participants who have completed courses with professional certification, such as fintech and innovation, which they can add to their CVs or Facebook accounts.

ED Dr Lim explained that the courses are conducted on weekday evenings and Saturdays, thus providing a good alternative for working professionals to full-time courses. She added: "The use of Web 2.0 tools and e-learning platforms enable off-campus contact when needed."
