SFA suspends two F&B business operations following mass food poisoning case at ByteDance office in Singapore

Both Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services are required to clean and sanitise their premises, including equipment and utensils, and dispose all ready-to-eat food and perishable food items.

Following the recent incident of mass food poisoning at ByteDance's office, Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) and Singapore Food Agency (SFA) are investigating a case of gastroenteritis. A total of 130 individuals who had consumed food supplied by Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services were affected, of which 17 were hospitalised and are currently in stable condition. The rest have sought outpatient treatment, self-medicated, or recovered without treatment.

In view of the severity of the incident, SFA has suspended the food business operations of both Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services from 31 July 2024 until further notice. Beyond that, the licensees are required to clean and sanitise their premises, including equipment and utensils, and dispose all ready-to-eat food and perishable food items.

On top of re-sitting and passing the Food Safety Course Level 1, all food handlers working in the premises must also test negative for foodborne pathogens before being able to resume work as food handlers. The appointed Food Hygiene Officer working at the premises must re-attend and pass the Food Safety Course Level 3 before being able to resume work as a Food Hygiene Officer.

In its joint statement with MOH, SFA has reminded food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times, affirming that it "will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act."

The statement further advises members of the public who come across poor hygiene practices in food establishments not to patronise such outlets and to report to SFA via its online feedback form with details for follow-up investigations.
