Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is now 85% complete as of July 2025, says Minister for Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul. In a Facebook post on 1 September 2025, he shared that based on discussions with the China Communications Construction Company Limited, the main contractor for the ECRL, Phase One of the project is on track to be completed by January 2027.
"The ECRL project is more than just railways; it's an economic catalyst for the East Coast."
"Through the Economic Catalyst Project (EAP) Initiative, we plan to attract more investment and establish new logistics hubs and industrial parks along the ECRL route. All these efforts are to ensure that the ECRL not only facilitates movement, but also generates job opportunities and improves the people's standard of living," he added.
Introduced in 2017, the ECRL project is expected to contribute a growth of 3.8% to Malaysia's GDP by 2047, according to Tengku Zafrul's progress update in February 2024. Read our previous update here.
