Its parent company stated that it will inform employees about the amount and details of compensation as soon as possible.
Hong Kong congee chain Ocean Empire Food Shop, which has been in business for 33 years, has announced the immediate closure of all its stores and the termination of all employees' contracts.
According to local media reports, its parent company Ocean Empire International Ltd sent a letter to all employees on 7 May 2025, stating that the decision was made based on factors such as the deteriorating operating environment and the company's financial situation. All stores and offices have been closed on the same day.
The company also mentioned in the letter that it will undergo liquidation through a process of creditors’ voluntary winding-up, and inform employees about the amount and details of claims for unpaid wages, payment in lieu of notice, untaken annual leave, and severance payment as soon as possible. Employees may consult the Labour Department regarding their legal rights and the compensation they can claim.
As showed on its official website, Ocean Empire Food Shop has seven branches across various districts in Hong Kong.
