Microsoft layoffs expected this week

The next round of layoffs at Microsoft is expected to take place this week. The cuts will impact around 700 jobs and are part of the plan to eliminate 2,850 jobs by June 2017, Business Insider reports.

The upcoming cuts won't affect any specific group, but will instead be spread across the company's offices and business units worldwide, a source familiar with the matter told Business Insider. According to the source, the layoffs are designed to "update skills in various units".

Last year, Microsoft announced it would cut 2,850 jobs related to its smartphone business over the course of a year. According to Business Insider's source, most of those roles have already been eliminated.

The company is expected to officially announce the cuts around the presentation of its earnings for the December quarter on Thursday, January 26.
