Malaysia Day 2025 comes with a long weekend: 15 September declared an additional holiday

In a move to honour national unity and appreciation for the rakyat’s support, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced an extra holiday to mark Malaysia Day.

Malaysians will enjoy a long weekend in September 2025, as Monday, 15 September has been declared an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on 23 July 2025 via his official Facebook page. The additional public holiday aims to honour the spirit of unity among Malaysians and is part of several initiatives rolled out as a show of appreciation to the people.

With Malaysia Day falling on Tuesday, 16 September, the extra day off creates a three-day weekend for many, giving Malaysians an extra day to celebrate.

Other rakyat-focused measures announced

The additional holiday came alongside a series of people-focused initiatives under the MADANI government. These include:

  • A one-off RM100 cash contribution to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, disbursed through MyKad from 31 August to 31 December 2025. The amount can be used to purchase basic necessities at over 4,100 participating stores nationwide.

  • A freeze on toll rate increases for 10 major highways this year, with the government covering over RM500mnin related costs.
  • Electricity bills will be reduced by up to 14%, benefitting around 85% of users, following a tariff restructuring.
  • The price of RON95 petrol will be lowered to RM1.99 per litre through a targeted subsidy scheme, aimed at helping over 18mn Malaysians, including gig workers, motorcyclists, and car users.

In his post, Prime Minister Anwar emphasised that every policy and decision made under the administration is aimed at “uplifting the dignity of the people” and ensuring shared prosperity.
