It is no surprise that health insurance is expensive. Unfortunately, in countries with an ageing population, costs can be expected to rise even more.
According to a recent white paper by Mercer, the incidence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and cardiovascular disease increases with age, posing a challenge for Asia Pacific’s mature workforces.
With the rising costs of healthcare, many companies have found that prevention (that is, keeping staff healthy) is cheaper than cure (that is, healing them when they are sick).
In some cases, the cost of company-sponsored nutrition, exercise and ergonomic office design reduces spend on doctors, hospitals and insurance (not to mention the cost of absenteeism and low productivity) by more than the cost of prevention.
