Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced an update regarding the field of study requirement for post-graduation work permits (PGWPs), with 178 fields of study being removed from eligibility.

The removed fields include certain programmes for technicians, building and property maintenance, student counselling, agriculture, and other related courses. Authorities have stated that these fields of study are no longer linked to occupations experiencing long-term labour shortages.

The change will affect international students in non-degree programmes (programmes other than bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees) who apply for study permits on or after 25 June 2025. Those who submitted their study permit application before this date, will still be eligible for a PGWP if their field of study was on the list when they applied for their study permit, even if it has since been removed.

In the same update, 119 new fields of study in key sectors – such as healthcare and social services, education, and trades – have been added. This brings the total number of PGWP-eligible fields of study to now 920.
